Obituary

Thomas A. VanSelus, age 58, of Shell Lake, WI passed away on Thursday, October 23, 2014 at his home.

Thomas Arthur was born February 18, 1956 in Chicago, IL the son of Thomas F. and Helen Marie (Kenosha) VanSelus. He graduated from Shell Lake High School and started working in construction remodeling houses. Thomas joined the army on June 6, 1977 and served for three years, much of it stationed in Germany. He earned the rank of master sergeant and the National Defense Service Medal. Tom was honorably discharged on March 25, 1980 and returned to Shell Lake, WI. He went to work with his Uncle in “Tom’s Masonry” where they did all kinds of masonry and he specialized in field stone work. While working as a mason, Tom met Renee Elena Warnek in Darlington, WI. Tom and Renee were married on November 22, 1988 in Sarasota, FL. Together they operated a small farm in Dewey with wonderful neighbors where they raised beef and sheep. Tom continued working as a mason and eventually began his own business, called Stone Age that he was operating until the time of his death. Tom enjoyed photography, painting in oils, gardening, hunting and cutting firewood. He loved to take trips where he could just drive and stop at local places of history, unique buildings and visit small dining cafés. He was a member of Stone Mad and Fine Art of America.

Tom is survived by his wife of 26 years, Renee; two sons, Robert of Warren, MI and Thomas J. of Shell Lake, WI; mother, Helen VanSelus of Shell Lake, WI; aunt, Carol Haseltine of Spooner, WI; brother-in-law, Steven (Mary) Warnek; two nephews, one niece and several cousins.

A memorial service will be held for Tom at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 30, at the Scalzo-Taylor Chapel in Spooner with Pastor John Sahlstrom officiating. Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home.

"GRANDMOTHER'S APRON"

THE PRINCIPAL USE OF GRANDMA'S APRON WAS TO PROTECT THE DRESS
UNDERNEATH, BUT ALONG WITH THAT, IT SERVED AS A POTHOLDER FOR
REMOVING HOT PANS FROM THE OVEN.

IT WAS WONDERFUL FOR DRYING CHILDREN'S TEARS, AND ON OCCASION
WAS EVEN USED FOR CLEANING OUT DIRTY EARS.

FROM THE CHICKEN COOP, THE APRON WAS USED FOR CARRYING EGGS,
FUSSY CHICKS, AND SOMETIMES HALF-HATCHED EGGS TO BE FINISHED
IN THE WARMING OVEN.

WHEN COMPANY CAME, THOSE APRONS WERE IDEAL HIDING PLACES FOR
SHY KIDS.

AND WHEN THE WEATHER WA COLD, GRANDMA WRAPPED IT AROUND HER
ARMS.

THOSE BIG OLD APRONS WIPED MANY A PERSPIRING BROW, BENT OVER
THE HOT WOOD-STOVE.

CHIPS AND KINDLING WOOD WERE BROUGHT INTO THE KITCHEN IN THAT
APRON.

FROM THE GARDEN, IT CARRIED ALL SORTS OF VEGETABLES. AFTER THE
PEAS HAD BEEN SHELLED, IT CARRIED OUT THE HULLS.

IN THE FALL, THE APRON WAS USED TO BRING IN APPLES THAT HAD
FALLEN FROM THE TREES.

WHEN UNEXPECTED COMPANY DROVE UP THE ROAD, IT WAS SURPRISING
HOW MUCH FURNITURE THAT OLD APRON COULD DUST IN A MATTER OF
SECONDS.

WHEN DINNER WAS READY, GRANDMA WALKED OUT ONTO THE PORCH,
WAVED HER APRON, AND THE MEN KNEW IT WAS TIE TO COME IN FROM
THE FIELDS TO DINNER.

IT WILL BE A LONG TIME BEFORE SOMEONE INVENTS SOMETHING THAT
WILL REPLACE THAT 'OLD-TIME APRON' THAT SERVED SO MANY WORTH-
WHILE PURPOSES.

REMEMBER:

GRANDMA USED TO SET HER HOT BAKED APPLE PIES ON THE WINDOW
SILL TO COOL.

HER GRANDDAUGHTERS SET THEIRS ON THE WINDOW SILL TO THAW.

THEY WOULD GO CRAZY NOW TRYING TO FIGURE OUT HOW MANY GERMS
WERE ON THAT APRON.

I DON'T THINK I EVER CAUGHT ANYTHING FROM AN APRON---
EXCEPT LOVE.

The sun rises up over the vast cityscape of Jerusalem, lighting the white limestone walls of the old city and creeping over buildings. Just north of the walls, a garden sits undisturbed.
Shortly, a throng of tourists will arrive and take their spots on the benches overlooking the garden. Some will descend the steps to the lowest point in the garden, quietly duck through a door carved in stone, and stare reverently into a hollowed portion of the rock where a body was laid to rest about two thousand years ago. As they leave, they will notice a sign on the door: “He is not here, for He is risen.”

David Thomas The United States government received the territory which would become Nevada from the Mexican government in the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848. Under the property clause (U.S. constitution article 10, section 3, clause 2), the United States government can make use of territories or other property of the United States government. In United States v. Gardner in 1997, another Nevada rancher used similar arguments as Mr. Bundy about how the state of Nevada not the U.S. government owned a different piece of land. The rancher cited a case from 1845. In this case, Virginia and Georgia had basically pawned land to the U.S. government to help them pay for debts accrued during the Revolutionary War. This particular agreement stated that the land would be held by the U.S. government until the land became a state. At the time of statehood, ownership of the land would be transferred to the state. This specific agreement was carried out and does not apply to Nevada. The last argument that has been made by Nevada ranchers is that the Equal Footing Doctrine limits the amount of land the U.S. government can own. However, the Equal Footing Doctrine involves political standing and sovereinty relative to other states of the Union. The only mention of property states that the shores and beds of navigatable waters are owned by states ............................................................................................................So, the U.S. did own the land before Mr. Bundy. The right of the federal government to own this land is written into the constitution. The Nevada ownership of the land has been shot down in court (U.S. v. Gardner). Also, I have acquired court documents from U.S. v. Bundy from 1998 and 2013. Mr. Bundy and his followers are the only people that have used intimidation in this conflict.
Let me learn you something real quick. This man is not a hero. He is a man who has been breaking the law for 20 years and is using political views to manipulate people into helping him. His actions are causing the deterioation of lands the government is attempting to conserve for both the desert tortoise and for public use.Let me spin you a historical yarn..... The federal government owns land that has been acquired by the United States government. Much of this land has been turned over to private citizens for no or a minimal fee through a series of Homestead Acts. These acts have given land to private individuals who were willing to live on the land. Originally, individuals were given 160 acres with subsequent increases to 320 and 640 acres in amended Homestead Acts.
Unclaimed land remained in possession of the federal government and has been held in the public trust since. Ranchers in the west were able to use public land for grazing unrestricted until 1936. The Dust Bowl in the1930’s caused public outcry and was attributed to the deterioration of rangelands. The Taylor Grazing Act of 1936 was the first attempt to help rangelands on public land to recover (public land and federal land can be used interchangably). Under the Taylor Grazing Act, permits were issued to ranchers allowing them to graze their cattle on public lands (the cost of permits was and still is a fraction of what it would cost for ranchers to raise cattle on private land). These permits were meant to limit the number of cattle on public lands and allow rangelands to recover. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) was established in 1946 to manage federal lands that did not fall under the control of the Forest Service and National Park Service (aka the rangelands). Subsequent acts were passed by congress allowing the BLM to limit the number of permits issued for grazing on public land.
The Endangered Species Act was passed by Congress in 1973 to reduce and prevent the extinction of species. The Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) was given the responsibility of identifying and listing species that are endanger of extinction as set by the ESA. In 1980, the desert tortoise was listed as threatened under the ESA. Along with listing, the FWS must designate critical habitat for a listed species. In 1993, the FWS proposed a rule to designate critical habitat for the desert tortoise. After a year of accepting and responding to public comments, a final rule was codified in 1994. The final rule listed this BLM land as critical habitat for the desert tortoise. To help conserve the desert tortoise under the ESA, the BLM increased the cost of grazing permits. Mr. Bundy quit paying the grazing fees that all other ranchers continued to pay. In 1998, the courts upheld federal ownership and ordered Mr. Bundy to pay grazing and trespass fees. Mr. Bundy continued to graze his cattle illegally. In 2013, the courts ordered the removal of Mr. Bundy's cattle to prevent further deterioration of public lands and to collect the back dated fees (fees that other ranchers have been paying).

My note:
The cost per head for grazing right are ridiculously low......or is this about something else. I am a believer that this land belongs to you and me, not just the Bundy empire.

 I don't think it's just jealousy because we don't have a balcony.......

Government and industry experts estimate the US production of frac sand at 25 million to 30 million metric tons a year and growing – most of it now coming from the upper Midwest.

The mining boom looks different from state to state. Minnesota and Illinois each have a handful of large frac sand mines, with new ones on the way. Iowa has ample sandstone, but so far only one operating mine. Wisconsin, however, with its easy access to railroads and relatively permissive regulations, has become a hive of sand mining. In 2010, the state had 10 mines and processing facilities. Today it has 132, with nearly 100 more that are in the planning stages or have been approved.

"There are so many, it's hard to keep track of them," says Thomas Dolley, a sand expert with the US Geological Survey outside Washington.

The mining boom has aroused opposition, spawning numerous small activist groups with names like Preserve Trempealeau County and Save the Bluffs. Some residents of sand-rich areas in Iowa, Illinois, and Minnesota – about 225 of whom met at a "Citizens' Frac Sand Summit" in Winona, Minn., in January – are alarmed by what they see in Wisconsin. "We don't want to be like them," says Amy Nelson, an anti-mining activist from Goodhue County, Minn. "We don't want to be overrun by sand mines."

Trying not to get too political, but......
Some snippets of commentaries I read this morning that deserve some thought.......
re: 2008....Only four months ago, Mr. Bush and Mr. Putin met in Sochi, the Russian resort only miles from Georgia, and signed a "framework agreement" that pledged cooperation on a variety of diplomatic and security matters and declared that "the era in which the United States and Russia considered one another an enemy or strategic threat has ended."

Our good guy/bad guy rubric is not consistent, however. We support young democracies, until election results don't fit our preferred narrative. We decry brutal, autocratic regimes, but make exceptions for countries with important economic or historical ties. And former enemies can become friends -- black hats exchanged for white -- when the confluence of democratic change, political alignment and economic interests align.

A weaker US seems to have a lot to do with degrading the office by way of the commercial minded interests of so called "news". If the hype sells more adverti'zzzzing' (and votes) go for it! ....after five years of telling the world how weak we are, why shouldn't they believe it.
The worlds perception of highest office in the world and the person holding that office are inseparable. Continually degrading and subverting one of coarse puts a lasting stain on the other. Disagreeing and fighting for change is our right......how we do it effectively and respectfully our responsibility.
